zoom zoom zoom! on the Transfăgărăşan

Trans Fagarasan, originally uploaded by D.LOS.

An oft-photographed piece of Romania, it would seem, the Transfăgărăşan road (“over the Făgăraş Mountains”)
came into some fame in 2009 on Top Gear, the car-centric British tv show. (You can do a Google search to watch a video or clips of that episode.) Here’s another good photo of it.

  • 90 km (60 mi) of twists and turns
  • climbs to 2,034 metres (6673 ft) altitude
  • average speed is around 40 km/h (25 mph)
  • cost: 6 million kilograms (13 million lbs) of dynamite and the lives of 40 soldiers due to construction accidents

According to the internet: “Transfagarasan road is (officially) open from July 1st to Nov 1st. It is closed during the night.”

Personally, I would feel safer in that cable car (telecabină). Plus, it looks like fun.
