On location: Communist face-lift

The grey Communist-era apartment blocks have been getting a facelift; more insulation and a coat of paint. Very cheery-looking. At Calea Mosilor & Strada Popa Petre.

On location: Athenaeum at night

I hope you’ll forgive the crappy quality of my phone’s camera, but I am in Bucharest this week and the Athenaeum looked so pretty at night.

Kretzulescu Church

The Kretzulescu Church (Biserica Creţulescu) was finished in 1722 and since then survived damage from two earthquakes and one revolution (its back, shown here, faces Revolution Square).

updated post: Architectural rebirth

I’ve updated the post on the headquarters of the Romanian Architects Union with a ton of details (or links to details) about the building’s past and its design/construction. Enjoy!

Athenaeum, originally uploaded by Iulia Mogos.

The Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Român) is neoclassical concert hall in Bucharest and home of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s across the street from the former palace and the Hotel Athenee Palace Hilton and a few blocks from Revolution Square.

Architectural rebirth

In Bucharest on the corner of Dem Dobrescu Street (Strada Dem I. Dobrescu) near Revolution Square (Piaţa Revoluţiei) is the headquarters of the Romanian Architects Union (sediul Uniunii Arhitectilor din Romania (UAR)) built inside the ruined building of the secret police (Direcţia V Securitate), which used to be the embassy of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Photo and back-story of the original building (English).

Architects: Dan Marin, Zeno Bogdanescu
Construction Engineers: Popp & Asociatii
Contractor: ACMS (project page)

Fortune Teller man

Don’t worry, I hadn’t forgotten to include photos of the people in Romania.

So…who is this man? Do you know anything about him? Is that some sort of music-making device he’s holding? And is this photo of the same man?
